Baseball Bat Rules

USA Baseball (the governing body for amateur baseball) has a new bat standard that goes in to effect January 1, 2018 called the USABat standard. Grassland Athletic Association will be adopting this new bat standard but, in an effort to minimize the impact on our players and families, we will use 2018 as a transition year. As such, we have established the following bat policy:

  1. For league play, players must have a bat that meets the USABat standard if they wish to play with a “big barrel” bat (2 5/8-inch barrel) but they may also use an existing USSSA-sanctioned 2 1/4-inch bat during the 2018 calendar year if they so desire.
  2. No USSSA-sanctioned (or other sanctioned) “big barrel” bat may be used in league play (either the 2 5/8-inch or 2 3/4-inch barrel) starting January 1, 2018.
  3. Starting January 1, 2019, only bats that meet the USABat standard may be used in league play.
  4. When playing games at other parks, teams must comply with that park's bat requirements (and we’ll do our best to know what those are prior to sending a team there).
  5. Teams playing tournament games sanctioned by outside bodies such as USSSA, Game7, BPA, etc. will be expected to abide by the bat standards required by the applicable sanctioning body.
